I learned something new the other day. I learned that in Rhode Island a flavored ice cream milk shake with flavored syrup is called a cabinet. Interesting. I did a search and couldn't find out any history on this. Does anyone know where this term comes from? I'd love to find out!
I found this vanilla cabinet recipe on Martha's website. We had these after our BBQ on the 4th. They are super easy and look so very festive!
I made strawberry and blueberry. You can also make cherry and raspberry if you like.
Things are really supposed to heat up around here for the remainder of the week so I think I'd better whip these up again!
Vanilla Cabinets with Fresh Fruit
adapted from Martha Stewart Living
4 cups of strawberries, quartered
4 cups of blueberries
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup agave nectar
2 qts fat free vanilla frozen yogurt
1/2 cup half and half
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
In a medium sauce pan, combine 1 tbsp of lemon juice, 1/2 of the agave nectar and the strawberries. In another medium saucepan, combine 1 tbsp of lemon juice, the other 1/2 of agave nectar and the blueberries. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until berries release their juice, about 10 minutes. Transfer the strawberries and blueberries into separate bowls and cool in the fridge.
In a large bowl, whisk the frozen yogurt, half and half and vanilla until creamy. Spoon 1/4 cup of either fruit into the bottom of a glass. Top with milk shake. Repeat with remaining fruit and milk shake. Garnish with fresh fruit. Serve immediately.

And I have learned something new here today....the berry fruity ice cream shake looks cool and delicious!
I've never heard of this cabinet business before but I was really confused when I read your post title! These look amazing though. I am seriously craving one, especially since it's going to get to almost 100 today!
"Cabinets"...I didn't know that. Looks like we have a hot week ahead. Crazy weather. Your cabinets are a great way to stay cool.
Sorry I'm no help with this but, it looks delicious and has to be good with that fresh fruit.
A cabinet? Who knew? I love the retro look of these in the mason jars!
Hmmm, it would be intersting to know where the name comes from. They do sound delicious no matter hwere the name comes from.
When ice cream is added, Coffee Milk is called a “Coffee Cabinet” or “Coffee Cab.” In other words, a “cabinet” is a local term for a “frappe” which is a regional term for an ice cream milk shake. It is though to be called a “cabinet” because it unknown originator kept his blender in a kitchen cabinet. Also mixers were often stored in square wooden cabinets.
This is what I found- refers to the blender its made it, and originated in Rhode Island as well- a local usage...
Also, I have seen upscale bars and restaurants have reverted back to the use of mason jars- even in NYC, Brooklyn area!
Love this!
it IS interesting.. and those shakes look AMAZING!!!
I am from the Midwest so I have never heard of this "cabinet" thing... but they look utterly delicious. I tried to look it up in Wikipedia but came up empty handed. Weird that there would be no history about it!
Those look so good in this hot weather!
Those definitely look festive. I put you under Food in the Rosebud category. If that's not kosher lemme know!
Huh? Cabinet? That's interesting. I like how you present the cabinets! yumy!
What a darling blog! I just scrolled down several entries and they were all so clever and cute. So happy to have stumbled upon you today. Never heard of a cabinet, love your use of the jars :)
That is so interesting! Surely you're bound to have a RI reader on here somewhere who has the skinny on that. and yes, I think that 100 plus heat indexes call for lots and lots of cabinets!!
I had no idea you could drink a cabinet...but I like it!
I will have to start drinking cabinets more often. Thanks for sharing Kim! You have some of the BEST recipes.
I just learned something new (I had no idea they were called that either). They sound delicious and look beautiful, Kim!

YUM. I just wanted you to know that I am completely in love with your blog - I can't wait to read more (and go back through old posts!)
I've not heard of that before...but those look awesome:)
Those are beautiful! I spent much of my childhood in RI but have no idea why they are called cabinets. I'll have to ask my Mom! However, I do have another tidbit for you... in RI be careful when ordering coffee with milk. A "coffee milk" is a drink made with cold milk and coffee syrup (like chocolate syrup for chocolate milk).
I never heard them called that before! These look heavenly! It has been 100 + degrees and these would hit the spot. Pass the blueberry one, please!
You are so creative Kim... lovely photos and cabinets presentation...very unusual name I must agree.
I love how your recipes are always so fun but also LOOK amazing and to-die-for delicious.
I have never heard of those either, but they certainly look delicious!! I would love one right about now....I think I here the strawberry calling my name!
yuum those look very good!
These look amazing-I am going to have to try them. Just found your blog today. You've got a new follower! Happy Friday!
What is the recipe for those cool drinks? Those look so good!!!
Susan
A cabinet? Hmm....that's an interesting name for something that is basically a milk shake. I don't know about the origin of the name, Kim, but they looks so wonderful. And I'm so hungry right now I could probably down 2 (smile)...
found you through bonbon rose girls featuring your post. love your blog and i am hoping to try this recipe. now following. happy to meet you.
This looks like quite a refreshing and yummy treat. I've always enjoyed the combination of berries and cream.
These "cabinets" look great. Never have heard the word either. Very refreshing for summer.xo
Do you know I lived just over the border from RI and never once heard that phrase. I'll be dipped.
This might be the best looking yummyness I have ever seen.
