A couple of days ago I received some wonderful samples of Riazul Tequila in the mail. Riazul is a top shelf 100 percent agave tequila. I taste tested each one...of course. Anejo, the one in the center, is aged in French oak barrels for two years, longer than any tequila in it's class. It's meant to be a sipping tequila. There are subtle hints of agave, honey, vanilla, dried fruits and spices. After one small sip I could tell this was not your ordinary tequila. I could definitely taste the honey and vanilla and it was so smooth. Really nice!
Riazul also makes Reposado, which is aged for 9 months in French and American oak barrels. It's also a nice sipping tequila with hints of citrus fruit. Then there is Riazul Silver. This one is bottled directly following distillation. It represents the most traditional form of tequila and can be served chilled or on the rocks. It's also perfect for mixed drinks like margaritas.

I chose to use it in a Spicy Pina. I found this recipe at About.com. Apparently this drink was enjoyed in the movie, Sex in the City 2. Normally, I'm not a fruity drink kind of girl but this one wasn't too sweet and the kick from the jalapeno was really fun.
Spicy Pina
2 parts tequila, I used Riazul Silver
2 parts pineapple juice
.5 part simple syrup, I actually used agave nectar instead
Splash of orange juice
1 slice of jalapeno pepper, muddled
Garnish with orange and jalapeno
In a mixing glass or shaker, muddle the agave and jalapeno slice. Add the ice, tequila and juices. Shake well, garnish and serve.
