Almost exactly but really quite different

Our home phone number is one number different from a Rent-to-Own place in town. Needless to say, we get a lot of their calls. In fact, it happens almost daily. Even their own employees call us by mistake. It's funny to me because I will pick up the phone and say "hello" and the person on the other end will start rambling on to me about a piece of furniture they need, or they explain why they are late in arriving to the store, or they will give me their employee number and then proceed to tell me what the problem is with a delivery. If we aren't home they will leave a message, maybe regarding a payment they intend to make or a complaint they have. They leave me a call back number and let me know that they don't understand why there is no answer during business hours and can someone please call them back. If I do answer the phone I will usually interrupt them and say, "Are you trying to call ____? Their number is ----------". They apologize, thank me, and hang up.

I find this perplexing, annoying, and amusing all at the same time.

All of this wrong number business reminds me of tonight's dinner. You see I wanted to make this recipe or even this recipe but found that I didn't have the right ingredients so I ended up with this almost exactly but really quite different recipe.

ingredients
  • 1 cup rice, cooked according to directions
  • 2 chicken breast, cooked and chopped
  • 1 16 oz can refried beans
  • 1 14.5 oz can of petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 4 oz can of fire-roasted green chilies
  • 1 cup corn
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced dried onion
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1 cup crushed tortilla chips
sour cream
diced tomato
hot sauce

In a large bowl mix the rice, chicken, beans, tomatoes, chilies, corn, garlic, onions, and pepper.

Spread into a greased 13x9 pan. Top with tortilla chips and cheese. Cover and place into a 375 degree oven for 30 minutes. During the last 10 minutes of cooking time remove cover to brown top slightly.

Serve with diced tomatoes, sour cream and a bit of hot sauce or anything else ya like!

Do you get any wrong numbers at your house and how do you handle it???

Okay that really would be annoying. And why would a business answer their phone, "hello" and leave it at that? Ummm duuuuuh.

I like the idea of topping it with the chips! I always like a little crispiness to my food. :)

I really love the post title too. :D

Growing up, our number was 1 digit away from the county courthouse...we got calls almost daily from people trying to get out of jury duty or ranting about "unfairly issued" parking/speeding tickets. Total PITA!

Your casserole thing looks yummy, even if you had to improvise!

You'd think that the employees would dial the number correctly. haha... I bet those calls get annoying.

Good looking casserole. Awesome use of that you had in stock. I wouldn't have known the difference. I'd eat it either way.

Looks great. I bet the taste is even better.
I do get "wrong number" phone calls, and they usually start with "Who is this?" Sorry Mrs., you phoned me, shouldn't you start by saying who's calling? Or they ask: "Can I talk to you mom, sweety?" No, my mom passed away 12 years ago.
What I hate most is when they keep calling the same "wrong" number even after you have told them they dialed the wrong number.

Your dinner sounds like a delightful combination, so delicious! And I love the ease of prep.

How annoying bout the phone!!

The tex-mex dish looks great! Yikes, I can't imagine getting wrong numbers like that all the time. You handle it with much more poise than I would!

Yum, turned out delicious, I'd say! We used to constantly get a call for some random person that had the same number except the middle two in the last four were switched. And they'd talk and talk and leave messages. Still happens from time to time...although I think it's always the same person calling. Go figure!

We got wrong numbers when we first moved. I think the people who they were trying to call owed money too - the calls were relentless. If we weren't them.. did we have a number for them.. know where they were..
Very annoying.
Thanks to the display now we only answer the numbers we know. The phone has quieted down considerably.
Great family fare, I love that we are into fall foods now.

I love casseroles! They are so satisfying and easy to make. I can't wait until it cools off a bit to start baking away!

For this and that and put together a delicious dish! I seem to always think I have the ingredients...and it is way to far for me to drive to the store...

Oh yes we used to get wrong numbers...In the night, no less.

This is my idea of a good casserole, Kim. Love all the ingredients, especially the crushed chips on top. They add that yummy crunch factor.

YUM! I make something similar, but I don't add as much yumminess. I'm making this version from now on...

Aren't wrong numbers just serendipity in another light? Especially in the kitchen. I will sometimes read the comments on recipes, especially on Epicurious. People will say all kinds of things about the quality of the recipe and then go on to say how they didn't really follow the recipe anyway, but substituted this and left out that and skipped this step and .... Still, more often than you might imagine, the outcome is delicious.

I've been craving Mexican food lately. This looks really good. I have most of these ingredients on hand...only I have pork instead of chicken and no sour cream....

Mmm... that looks like a delicious Mexican casserole.

I rarely get wrong numbers, which is good, because I find it super annoying. My siblings like to be funny and actually talk to people who dial the wrong number.

What a yummy looking meal! I was recently getting a wrong number call, they ignored me saying that it was a wrong number and said something that sounded like a recorded message so I thought it was telemarketing and for the next 10 times they called, I didn't pick it up. Finally, I picked up and asked them to put me on a "Do not call list" when the person apologized and said they won't call anymore. So it wasn't a recorded message, but I still don't know whether it was telemarketing or wrong number :)

There is a fun movie on this one..two guys badly needing money..getting a wrong number which demands a huge ransom for kidnapped kid. These wise guys decide to play the middleman and earn a lot of dough...pretty fun movie :)

the way you approached this recipe sounds a lot like how i cook... similar but not really. that phone thing would drive me crazy.

When I was a kid our number was very close to a business too, and we used to get several calls.

Can you imagine if it was similar to a hospital's number? You'd be getting calls all day (and maybe all night) long!

So this looks yummy! We love casseroles.

This looks like a fantastic meal! We've had a number in the past the one one off from Domino's Pizza. I just started taking orders and ordering freebies...funny thing is I didn't get the complaint calls when their order wasn't delivered.

this looks so good, i love all of those ingredients!

after a while if we keep getting the wrong number for the same place,it gets so annoying! after the tenth call it's hard to be polite!

Because of the person who had my cell phone number before me, I get telemarketing/bill collection calls on my cell phone (I know, how annoying!). The worst part is when I try to call them back to say that I'm not the person they're trying to reach, I only get a messaging service! I've been meaning to register on the do not call list, thanks you just reminded me! ;)

This casserole looks incredible!

I was getting wrong number calls because the phone book transposed some numbers in one of their ads and listed my telephone number instead of the business's telephone number.

Finally one person told me he got the number in the phone book and gave me the page number. So I contacted the business and let them know.

We were one digit off the number of a bakery many years ago. Our phone on weekends rang constantly in the mornings. We had to have our number changed. That's a really nice looking casserole.

May be "wrong" but it looks so right! Very yummy! I do not find wrong numbers as mch as a quiter phone...we do so much by computer now it seems to hardly ring! Glad to be back here after a summer off! Tara

I love these Tex-Mex like casseroles - so hearty and comforting! I would get annoyed too - you have a lot of patience - I think I might just start hanging up after a certain point.

What a cute parallel story...answer you phone like another business, or simply say 'Ungourmet', and see what happens! Dish looks good to me :)

Kim that's so funny haha we had this same problem at my house but we were the same number as a night club! People were calling all the time for the guest list and reservations haha good times. This dinner is very innovative I like that. AND I promise I have not forgotten about you and your new header. I have been so busy!! I am trying my best to get around to it this weekend!!!

I don't get wrong numbers all that often, but I do get a lot of sales calls. SO annoying!

LOL. When I first had my phone installed here, I was given a recycled number of someone who used to have bill collectors calling her day and night. Well, no amount of telling these bill collectors that I was not Eva Smith, did not know her, that I had her recycled telephone number did any good. Finally, I just had to get a new number.

Casserole looks yummy-licious! Good interpretation of the recipes to come up with your own good and comfy dish!
