My mom always had cookies waiting for my sister and I after a long, hard day at school. Sometimes they were Hydrox double chocolate fudge and sometimes they were homemade. We loved Nestle Toll House cookies, peanut butter cookies with the cute little fork marks, and we most certainly adored our mom's Missouri cookies. I have never figured out why she called them Missouri Cookies. I did a search online and couldn't find any cookie with that name.
I tried a search for no bake chocolate oatmeal cookies and found one over at Brown Eyed Baker that looked just like the ones my mom used to make. The only change I made to the recipe was to add 1 tsp of cinnamon to the mix.
For this recipe you will need:
- 1 stick of butter
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 cups rolled oats (Quick cooking oats are best but I used regular because I had them.)
Pour oats into a large bowl. Pour chocolate mixture in with oats and give it a good stir.
Place heaping tablespoons of batter onto wax paper like so. Place into the fridge for several hours to allow cookies to set.
Serve to your little darlings with a tall cold glass of milk.
Grab yourself a cookie too, sit down with them, and ask all about their day. Smile, laugh, and savor the moment!

Here's Mom... I called them Missouri Cookies because that is the name the teacher gave them. I learned to make them in Homemaking class in the 7th Grade. They have always been a favorite of mine. I think you should have me over next time you make them and sit down with me and ask me about my day! :)

oh wow - I remember these cookies from when I was a kid (they made them in the school cafeteria) except they were spread in a cookie pan - cooled and then cut into squares - thanks for the great memory and a simple simon prep - I will be making these often now that I know about them again.....

These are really similar to my grandma's chocolate oatmeal cookies, which we LOVE!! Best cookies ever! She wasn't from Missouri, though; she was from Virginia.

I live in Missouri and have never heard these called Missouri cookies, but my mom makes ones basically the same, without the cinnamon, and she has always lived in Missouri. Good things come from Missouri :)

These were one of the first cookies that I ever made! It was for mini 4-H. I still love em'. I should definitely have these waiting for my daughter after her first day of school (Monday). Very sweet that your mom did that for you!
I have never seen the likes of those before!!! Maybe I need to drop some hints next door. Or maybe I just need to get off my dead butt and make them myself. Last week I actually made peanut butter cookies so why can't I make these? I have no excuses. :)
I always used to have a package of Oreos mixed in milk when I came home from school. These cookies look way more appetizing, though. An ideal snack!

Interesting about the name. I have seen these quite often but don't remember what other people have called them. Maybe Missouri Cookies will be a name I can remember.
